Just been my experience, and others that I have helped.
I haven't had anti-virus SW for years and my system is
perfectly clean, nor have I even seen the slightest suspicious email come through.

I do PC troubleshooting from time to time, and I've had so many people come to me saying that their PC is slow, or not accessing things, or what ever. The culprit? anti-virus SW.

Of course, do what you think is best.
